Test your knowledge of the requirements of ISO 9001 version 2026 in relation to the clauses and sub-clauses of the standard by answering the questions of the:

quiz ISO 9001 version 2026

1. When was the standard published?

On 16 September 2026 by ISO. It is the sixth edition and replaces ISO 9001:2015 together with its climate amendment A1:2024

2. What are the main changes?

An evolution, not a revolution: quality culture and ethical behaviour (5.1.1, 7.3), opportunities handled separately from risks (6.1.3), strengthened change management (6.3), climate change integrated into clause 4, business continuity considerations (6.1.2, 8.2.1), and dynamic monitoring of interested parties (4.2, 9.3.2)

3. Are there new mandatory documents?

No. The standard still requires 4 procedures (documented information to be available (scope of the QMS, process control, quality policy and quality objectives) and about 20 records (documented information to be available as evidence — with no additions

4. Are a quality manual and documented procedures required?

No, and this has been true since 2015. Neither the manual nor any named procedure is required; you document only what is useful

5. What is the transition timeline?

  • ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid until 30 September 2029

  • New certifications must be to the 2026 version only from 31 March 2028

  • You can transition voluntarily at any audit, including a surveillance audit

6. Must we address climate change?

The standard requires you to determine whether any QMS-relevant issues arise from climate change — a justified "no" in your context analysis is acceptable. The focus is the impact of climate on your ability to deliver (e.g. a supplier in a flood zone, a heatwave halting production), not your impact on the climate

7. Is a formal business continuity plan required?

No — the word "continuity plan" does not appear. You must determine the risks to your ability to deliver products and services continuously and regularly, and inform customers of contingency measures, including potential supply disruptions. An existing BCP is an excellent support, and ISO 22301 remains the dedicated reference

8. Must quality culture be documented?

No documentary requirement is attached to sub-clauses 5.1.1 and 7.3: auditors will look for factual and behavioral evidence (management rituals, leading by example, transparency), not a "quality culture procedure". ISO 10010 provides recommendations if needed

9. What happens to risk and opportunity registers?

Clause 6.1 is now split into three sub-clauses (6.1.1 determine, 6.1.2 actions on risks, 6.1.3 actions on opportunities): a single register with an empty "opportunities" column will no longer be enough — opportunities must be analysed, acted upon, and their effectiveness reviewed in 9.3.2

10. Has the documentation vocabulary changed?

Yes: "maintain / retain documented information" becomes "shall be available in the form of documented information" and "shall be available as evidence". Annex A.2 clarifies that the latter expression relates to the retention of objective evidence and implies no legal requirement

11. Is Annex A auditable?

No — it is informative, stated in the introduction. Fully rewritten (about twelve pages, one section per article), it clarifies terms such as "consider" vs "take into account". Beware of auditors who might read it as if it contained requirements

12. What should we do right now?

Update your context analysis (climate), risk and opportunity registers, and management review (new inputs), and run a gap analysis — without documentation inflation
